Ann Arbor’s First Hash Bash After Cannabis Legalization!
Ann Arbor has quite a few really nice head shops. You don’t want to miss these while you’re in town. Between the 4 reviewed below, you are sure to find that exact bong or dab rig you’ve been looking for. They all have great selections of glass art bongs and pipes AND a lot made by local artists. These stores have serious cannabis accessories. It’s a guarantee, if one doesn’t have what you’re looking for, another will.
All the head shops I visited are in very close proximity. 3 are right off the diag, where the bash is held. One is a couple of blocks away, close to Main Street. Let them know you read about them in Canniseur!
If you’re making a trek to Ann Arbor this year to celebrate the first Hash Bash held since legalization, make sure you check out the local head shops.
Stairway to Heaven
Stairway to Heaven
340 1/2 S State St, Ann Arbor, MI 48104
Stairway to Heaven is iconic. It’s Ann Arbor’s quintessential head shop, now celebrating 31 years. Stairway to Heaven holds a special place in my heart, being the 1st head shop I visited when I picked my habit back up in 2003. I love this place. It’s a complete throwback, but they now carry modern accessories – vape pens, etc.
Stairway to Heaven is owned by Arleen Kosak, who has been running it since a little after her husband died 15 years ago. She’s done a great job of staying current AND keeping the prices down. She’s known by UM students for good her pricing. Stairway to Heaven carries a large selection of glass pipes made by local artists. She’s got a nice selection of bongs, carries V sticks, and batteries.
It’s here that you can get hippie clothes and incense from a rather large selection of choices. This is head shop you just have to check out. There definitely are not many like this anymore.

Walking into 42 Degrees is like walking into a bold new world. It’s bright and airy, with loud colors making a big bold statement – ‘Cannabis is legal now and here we are!’ The showcases were well lit and inviting. 42 Degrees is owned by PK, who bought it about 3 years ago. However, she’s worked for the company since 2003, first as the bookkeeper, later in the store. The store has been here for 20 years in total, and is a dedicated community member. This is a hidden Ann Arbor gem.
42 Degrees specializes in local glass art. Collectors come from pretty far away to purchase the glass art. Her website will be complete in the next little bit, making it easier for collectors to purchase.
This head shop carries everything you would expect a shop to carry and then some. They are big sellers of Puff Co Peak, a big trend. 42 Degrees has quite a bit of anything you might be looking for, with reasonable pricing.
A particularly fabulous undertaking is their Michigan Glass project. Artists get together from all over and spend a weekend making art, which is then auctioned off. the proceeds go to Detroit Public Schools art program. Last year the artist Banjo took part. Banjo, is a local artist who has found fame on the west coast. You can find his art in museums. He created a piece that sold for $75,000 last year. Last year this wonderful program fully funded 4 elementary school art programs.
Special for Hash Bash is 42 Degrees grab bags. For varying amounts of money you can purchase a bag of unknown accessories. The lowest cost bag is $20. You are guaranteed to get at least a $25 pipe and then a few other things such as papers, ashtrays, lighters, and other items.

New York based Exscape has 9 locations in total. Two are in Michigan, in Ann Arbor & E. Lansing and the rest are in NY, PA, & MA. Walking into Exscape feels like walking into your every day headshop. It’s clean, wide open, and well lit. They carry just about anything you could want for your weed needs. They carry glass pipes, vape pens, and all the standard accessories. The owner was not in, but will be there special for Hash Bash. As I was leaving, the store filled up. This was the only store I visited that did not have the owner present.

Bongz and Thongz is Mohammad Hassan’s first location (with 2 more having opened since in Toledo). BTz started out 8 years ago with a sex shop in the lower level, thus the name. The sex shop is gone now and in its place, in the lower level, is where the vape products are sold. Street level has an incredible selection of glass art, Mohammad’s passion. Artists come from all over to show Mohammad their wares. He, personally selects which pieces will go in his store. The selection is amazing. There are quite a few bongs that change color depending on the light source. BTz has sold bongs for $25,000! Some of the art is signed and numbered. Catch BTz on Instagram to see their full selection of glass bong art.
Mohammad seemed to greet customers by name, as they came in. He treated everyone equally, no matter what. This shop is located downtown, not on campus. You can count on foot traffic being a bit different. His customer’s are of every walk of life, as long as you are 21 and older. (Ann Arbor has a stricter smoking law than the rest of the state.) Best sellers are vapes – of all kinds.

Precision Extraction Solutions Named Exclusive Equipment Supplier of Canapar S.r.L.
DETROIT, MI USA, February 12, 2019 – Precision Extraction Solutions (“Precision”), a market leader in cannabis and hemp extraction technology, has been named the exclusive equipment supplier of Canapar S.r.L. (“Canapar”) for the development and outfitting of its flagship extraction facility in Sicily, Italy.
On the heels of a $25 million CAD ($20 million USD) round of financing, that included a lead investment by Canopy Rivers Inc (TSXV:RIV), the corporate venture capital platform of Canopy Growth Corporation (TSX: WEED, NYSE: CGC), a global leader in the cannabis sector, Canapar engaged Precision for the design and manufacturing of an industrial scale hemp extraction plant.
“The KPD series extraction plant represents the newest and most innovative extraction technology in the marketplace. We are excited to see this revolutionary and automated cGMP solution at Canapar’s state-of-the-art facility,” states Nick Tennant, CTO of Precision.
The Precision® KPD Series is a scalable solution for industrial and agri-processing demands ranging from 2,200 lbs (1,000 kilograms) of cannabis or hemp input material per day to more than 100,000+ lbs per day.
Canapar’s Ragusa, Sicily facility, outfitted with a KPD series extraction plant, is expected to produce CBD extracts and isolate, which will then be used for a wide range of health and beauty, cosmetics, pharmaceutical and veterinary products.
“We chose Precision as our extraction technology partner because they are the most recognized and innovative extraction equipment company in the world. They are assisting us in all aspects of the project from facility design to equipment and training. With Precision’s help, the aim is to optimize the extraction process for the production of the world’s finest CBD isolate for the cosmetic and pharmaceutical market,” said Sergio Martines, CEO of Canapar.
The cGMP-compliant Ragusa facility is initially expected to be able to process over 600 tons of hemp biomass per year, making it the largest extraction facility in the European Union. With Precision’s assistance, Canapar is planning on scaling its operation within the next 12-18 months to keep up with projected demand.
According to Marc Beginin, CEO of Precision, “We are thrilled to be working with the professionals at Canapar. Canapar is poised to be the leading CBD isolate provider in Europe. They asked us to produce a scalable extraction plant with speed-to-market top of mind. Our team will be ready to deliver the first phase in Sicily this summer.”
The market for hemp extraction solutions to produce CBD isolate is growing rapidly. “Indeed, the market is robust,” says Beginin, “with the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill in the US, and increased legality of hemp-derived products worldwide, it is estimated that the market for hemp extracts will grow to $22 billion by 2020.”

Cannabis in Vancouver (and all of Canada) became legal the day before my visit for a conference. This is my first trip to Vancouver in 20 years, and my last trip was back in the 13 year non-use phase of my life.
This morning after an unusually delicious, locally-sourced breakfast, my girlfriend asked our waiter where we might get some weed. He wisely suggested we google ‘weed near me’. We found a store 700 meters away, and on the way back to our hotel. We paid the breakfast bill and were off to the dispensary within minutes.
I had read in all of BC, cannabis was only available for recreational purchase at one shop 2 hours northeast of Vancouver. However, my request for a buzz was going to get easily fulfilled. In about a 10 minute walk through great people-watching streets, we were in a clean and welcoming medicinal cannabis shop. I was asked to register a membership by showing my picture ID and filling a form, permanently printed on a wipeable clip board. I checked two boxes recognizing ‘potential dangers and liabilities’, and signed my name. The young, clean-cut greeter then took a picture of my white board registration and then wiped it clean. I guessed the image was filed into a database, retrievable by name. The whole process took a couple of minutes and was environmentally conscientious – paperless!
The Cannabis Purchase
Once the 2-minute registration was complete, I started browsing the wares. It was a smallish modern store front, with a glass counter in the middle displaying flower strains. Each strain was named and categorized by sativa, indica, or hybrid and then listed the medicinal values, as well as other effect-related attributes. Most of it was conventionally grown, with three strains organically grown. I consider myself a green environmentalist and had no desire to buy paraphernalia, only to dispose of it for travel back to the States. I quickly landed on the purchase of two pre-rolled joints, conventionally grown. One was indica, one was sativa.
Within a minute, I had purchased the two nice sized pre-rolls for a total of $10 CA ($7.50 USA) in such a surprisingly ordinary exchange.
Having a couple of joints in the interior pocket of my leather jacket, without fear of being arrested, made me feel amazingly whole. Being legally able to enjoy the herb that I’ve come to respect and love was perfectly grounding. In the sunny, Fall mid-color change afternoon, we walked along the water front from downtown to Stanley Park and visited the totem poles. Periodically, I lit up the sativa joint, and chatted up a creativity storm, immensely enjoying a very nice buzz.
On our way back to the hotel, we ducked into a wine store for a bottle of red. While we didn’t have to register and the selection was far greater, the ease of purchasing both were equally easy. This, is the way it should be.
